Pope Francis has taken an un-biblical position with regard to evangelism and the essential nature of truth, confirming once again the un-Christian character of the Catholic Church. In an interview, reported in the Washington Post on 2nd October, 2013 and documented in Ian Wishart’s latest book, Totalataria the Pope opined that each person “must choose to follow the good and fight evil as he conceives them.” He then added some emergent church philosophy to this error by “calling efforts to convert people to Christianity ‘solemn nonsense’ .”
The Pope’s ‘solemn nonsense’, contravenes Scripture (Luke 24:46-47; Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 1:8). To be fair his purpose was to draw a distinction between the hard gospel sell and relationship building leading to the gospel. Such a distinction encourages the soft gospel that we have discovered from the emerging church movement is no gospel at all. On top of that, of course, is the fact that the Catholic gospel is false anyway.
His relativisation of the knowledge of good and evil is classic post-modern cant. According to Jesus true worshippers worship in spirit and truth (John 4:23), while obeying God’s commands is the measure of one’s love for him (John 14:21; 1John 5:2-3). The Pope replaces objective Biblical truths with personalised human standards. In the interview the Pope talks of loving others, but misses the essential point that such love has first to come from a love for God and that love comes from obedience to his commands. It would be difficult to stray much further from real Christianity than to draw abstract distinctions between one form of evangelism and another. Whether it be the hard sell or the longer relational road both must end in a straightforward delivery of the right Gospel.
An evangelical Christian has no trouble recognising the error in the Pope’s views. He and all those like him would do well to heed the following:
- “He who listens to you listens to me; he who rejects you rejects me; but he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.” Luke 10:16
“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him.” John 3:36
“There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day.” John 12:48
Ever since the reformation and even long before that for true Christians Catholic dogma has denied the five ‘alone’s’ of the reformation and by definition rejected the one true Jesus Christ. The idolatrous worship of Mary would discredit the Catholic Church on its own, but it has also adopted other false beliefs that deny the full and final work of Jesus on the cross. The Pope’s comments strongly suggest the emerging church and Catholicism will soon find themselves on the same ecumenical road; the road that will take them both to the feet of the false prophet of Revelation – assuming of course a Catholic pope is not one and the same.

With the passing by the U.S. Senate of the Employment Non Discrimination Act Christian values continue to be trounced. Coming on the heals of the same sex marriage legislation the ENDA proves the homosexual agenda is clearly aimed at “criminalising Christianity” (World Net Daily). Both pieces of legislation flout American’s First Amendment rights and effectively nullifies a key component of the U.S. Constitution.
Across the globe all that is left of Christianity’s moral code is a generalised understanding that some things are ‘oughts’ and other things are ‘ought-nots’. These oughts are the vestiges of the natural knowledge of God’s moral order embedded in the human spirit.
The church is no longer contesting the moral high ground because it had already given up the fight prior to the 1960s. Capitulating to evolutionary dogma, existentialism and clerical liberalism had left the Church in a terribly weakened state. The excesses of hyper-Pentecostalism, the self-esteem and faith prosperity gospel and emergent church thinking has robbed Christianity of its legitimate vitality and relevance. Now most Christians are lukewarm at best (see our post: Therapeutic Deists – 12/10/13). A ‘great falling away’ is well advanced. For over 10 years Truth Watch’s prophetic warnings have been treated with scorn. So what’s next?
The return to paganism will continue (see Letters: A Letter to New Zealand’s Government – Return to Paganism). Man’s self-degradation knows no bounds. Governments across the western world have already been captured by Christian haters of various stripes. They will continue to subvert democracy, such as it is, to move as far away from God’s commands as it is possible to get. The sexualisation of society will continue. Lowering the age of consent and pre-school sex education is likely to be next. Incest, polygamy and bestiality will grow in popularity. Abortion will continue unabated, as the final solution for irresponsible sexuality. Euthanasia will make its mark on the aged. A modern form of slavery will grow; building on indebtedness, materialism and neo-liberal economics. Homosexuals will tighten their grip on the centres of political power and press for pederasty – man/boy sexual relations. It was rife in Nazi circles and since our western governments are incipiently fascist and homo-centric a return to pagan pederasty is likely.
God judged Sodom for being arrogant, overfed and unconcerned (Ezekiel 16:49-50). Homosexuality and other pagan practices all flourish in such conditions. God judged Sodom, its sister cities and Israel for its complacent toleration of immorality and idolatry. Today the wicked should celebrate their pyrrhic victories, for they will be short-lived. There can be little doubt God’s final judgement of the world cannot be far off. We should all be praying some of those who are cocking-a-snoot at God will wake up to their folly and be spared an eternity in hell.
On 8th November 2013 Fox aired My Hope America a gospel presentation honouring Graham’s 95th birthday. Hope would be difficult to fault. Graham emphasised that Christ is the only way. He spoke of confessing sin, repentance, and the importance of the cross. Even the testimonies by two young people largely reiterated the correct Gospel. Truth Watch welcomes the fact that in his latter days Billy has returned to the correct Gospel. We can also celebrate the wonderful evangelist he has been for so many decades. It is therefore deeply disappointing that for a period from at least 1997 Billy went off the rails and started preaching an un-biblical and ecumenical, false gospel.
In May of that year he appeared on Robert Schuller’s Hour of Power to proclaim: “Everybody that loves Christ or knows Christ whether consciously or not is part of the body of Christ… they may not even know the name of Jesus, but they know in their heart they need something…and turn to the only light that they have [another faith - TW]… they are saved and are going to be with us in heaven.” He also embraced Catholicism, calling the Pope “the greatest religious leader of the modern world and one of the greatest moral and spiritual leaders of the century (You Tube: Billy Graham False Teaching and Beliefs -2011).” He boasted that he had been preaching in Pope John Paul’s Polish cathedral when he was selected as the pontiff. In the same You Tube clip he is quoted as saying Islam had been misunderstood. He sided with Islam’s prophet, saying: “Mohammed had a great respect for Jesus and said he was the greatest prophet, except for himself.”
In a 2009 interview with Larry King Billy was questioned on salvation through other faiths. He said: “That’s in God’s hands, I can’t be the judge.” King asked him to comment on Christian leaders who deny other faiths lead to the same God. He said what they said was “true to some extent, but it’s not my call.” Billy knew quite well that Jesus said: “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” Why Billy abandoned the true Gospel he preached for decades is anyone’s guess. Perhaps he came under a lot of pressure from his organisation to become more inclusive. Perhaps money was a factor, or perhaps his celebrity status went to his head and he went the way of a Joel Osteen, a Rob Bell or a Robert Schuller. Pride may have got the better of him. What we do know for sure is that God will not dwell on why he compromised the Gospel. Instead, he will be angry about the effect it had on others. Jesus said those who cause others to stumble would be better off having a millstone tied around their necks and drowned (Matthew 18:6). Galatians 1:7-9 says those who preach a false gospel are under a curse. Truth Watch prays My Hope America is a public declaration by Billy that he has realised his error and practised what he preached for so long – repentence.
