Tony Campolo: An emergent divergent

Tony Campolo is acclaimed as a progressive evangelical.  He is part of the emergent church movement alongside the like of Rob Bell, Brian McLaren and Joel Osteen.  Tony Campolo is variously described as an American sociologist, a Baptist minister, a public speaker and he was spiritual advisor to former president Bill Clinton.  We draw you attention to our profile and associated links on this man  in our leader profiles section.  In our opinion Tony Campolo is a dangerous man.  Some say the emergent church movement is on the wane.  That may or may not be so, but that movement has infected the western church with false ideas that have become ‘elephants’ in the room for Christians.  While they remain undiscussed, as they often are in our luke-warn contemporary churches, they nevertheless have the power to cause major division.  False teachers like Tony Campolo are apologists for the unholy.  They reduce sins to unfortunate bu understandable choices. Homosexuality and same sex marriage are perfectly alright because the Bible does not mean what it plainly says.  Other religions might provide alternative paths to God. Of course, Jesus would not have had to die on the cross and rise again if that were so. Tony Campolo has been promoting un-biblical ideas for decades.  He could be described as a father of the emergent church movement.  He tells people what their itching ears want to hear.  They want to keep one foot in the Christian camp and one in the secular world.  Jesus tells us that is not possible.  Please read our profile.  The Truth Watch position on Campolo can be summed up in this verse:

  • 2 Cor 1:3-4 But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you  accepted, you put up with it easily enough.
